About

The West Group semi-final between Lokomotiv and Dinamo Riga was interesting for two reasons. Firstly, Lokomotiv are the reigning champions of the cup and are trying to defend their title. Secondly, the young Latvians managed to create quite a stir in the quarter-finals. They knocked out one of the favourites, SKA, and had everyone wondering whether they would be able to hold their own against yet another strong side.

The team from Yaroslavl, as you would expect from a winning club, got off to a flying start. It wasn’t until the tenth minute, however, that the puck flew into Dinamo’s net — courtesy of Bogdan Lebedev. With a couple of minutes until the break, the Latvians shocked spectators once again. During one of their rare counterattacks they were able to force the puck into their opponents’ goal to even the score at 1:1.

A very heated battle ensued in the second period. The defensive game was clearly stronger than the attack for both sides. Lokomotiv only managed to score at the end of the period. This time it was Arkadiy Loginov who put his name on the scoresheet.

At the beginning of the third period, the Yaroslavl team scored what turned out to be the deciding goal, with Roman Maksimov putting the puck away. The Latvians couldn’t find the strength to launch a final assault. 3:1 — Lokomotiv’s hardest fought victory.
