About

As can be expected of the favourite, SKA started its quarter-final against Dinamo Riga on the attack. The Latvians survived the first assault, and turned it around to launch a series of threatening counterattacks. They only had to lose focus for a moment, however, for Andrey Gassanov to slip past and find himself one-on-one with the goalie. The SKA player wasted no time in bagging himself a goal.

The team from St Petersburg stayed on the attack throughout the first period, but Riga continued to respond with stinging counterattacks. However, neither SKA nor Dinamo managed a goal before the second break.

The Latvians found a moment of strength in the final third. Their started to attack more aggressively and they managed to equalise four minutes before the final buzzer. Maksims Haritoncevs slipped the puck through a crowd of players at the goal line and into the back of the net. This was the first goal SKA had conceded in four games at this tournament.

The real headliner was that this took the game to a penalty shootout, where quite the incredible happened. The team from St Petersburg couldn’t score a single goal, and Sergejs Avotiņš scored the decider with a crazy shot down the middle. 2:1 — and the Latvians go onwards.
