About

As a face-off between Russia’s two most important cities, the SKA—Spartak fixture was a highlight of the tournament’s second day. Whether due to nerves or some other reason, Spartak let two goals get past them in the first five minutes. The Moscow team tried to catch up, as you would expect, but the teams finished the first period with a 2:0 lead for the club from St Petersburg.

The Muscovites spent nearly the whole of the second period in SKA’s zone, trying every possible angle of attack. Their efforts were in vain, however, with the sought-after goal proving elusive. At the start of the third period, the defenders had their chance to shine. Fans were treated to a tough game between two absolutely equal teams, covering every inch of the ice. The players’ nerves occasionally cracked under the tension: both teams had players sent off. One ejection changed the score, when Nikolay Krivolapov sent the puck into the goal. Spartak never gave in, but despite a passionate fight the team did not manage a single point and the game ended at 3:0 — a victory for St Petersburg.
