About

The St Petersburg ice-hockey players were highly motivated in their game against Yamal, as evidenced by the fact that two pucks found their mark during the first 90 seconds. This gave SKA a boost, and almost all of their attacks succeeded. The team looked relaxed and played beautifully, sending the puck into the Salekhard goal seven times in all. Yamal rarely made it into their opponents’ zone and had hardly any chances. The first period score was 9:0.

Things changed dramatically in the second period. The St Petersburg team seemed to be playing with gusto and posing threats with their shots, but for some reason, they stopped scoring. It was only in the eighth minute, in Yamal’s slot, that Andrei Gassanov proved himself to be the deftest player, scoring a hat-trick and taking the game to 10:0! That goal was the only one in the second 15-minute period.

The SKA players kept up the momentum in the final period, netting goals against their black-and-yellow-clad opponents three times. Ice-hockey aficionados would have appreciated the beauty of these goals. The St Petersburg team also enjoyed a power play and made excellent use of their extra player in the twelfth minute. Yamal caved in completely and allowed their opponents to rule the roost in their zone. As a result, SKA scored once more, making the final tally 15:0. You can only feel sorry for Yamal, for having had to begin their tournament against the St Petersburg players, who showed what terrific shape they had come to Sochi in.
