Penalty

About

The Riga dynamos, hitherto having ceded this tournament utterly, finally found their match. Jokerit had also lost three games, although they did put up more of a fight (taking at least the first battle with the St. Petersburg army team, where the Finns only went down in a series of penalty shots).

The first period confirmed the parity of the two sides’ strength — the boys from Helsinki threatened the other goal more. But only, perhaps, because their opponents could not rid themselves of the nasty habit of earning penalties on an equal footing. These episodes dictated the need to break the rules, for the rest they could easily have gotten around it without penalties. The only puck, to be honest, was put in on an equal footing by Jukhi Jokikhariu’s charges. In that situation and in the five on three situation, the Latvians held them off pretty well.

The second period was also dictated by Jokerit. Although they couldn’t defeat the Dinamo goal. The biggest applause came, of course, for goalkeeper Karlis Mezhsargs, spinning like a hamster in a wheel, blocking shots with his hands, feet, and stick.

Torn Bluks’s boys could have evened the score. The most active of them was Alekseis Kozlovs. His moves forced Kuuslu to foul and sent him for a two minute break, during which the Riga team confidently moved for almost an entire minute into the other team’s end. This was after his solo trip along the entire left side forced Joni Yamsya to get down on the ice. He was the player who, answering his teammate’s pass, with great speed flew towards the goal, very nearly hooking the puck in.

In a word, the ‘burgundies’ knew — if they were going to beat anyone at the Gazprom Neft Cup it was going to be Jokerit. In the final period they came out quite collected, putting the screws to the defence. In the first five minutes they were at their rival’s goal with a flurry of attacks! And such attacks, that the Finns had to take immediate counter-measures. As a result the Dinamo team had two more players on the ice for a minute and a half. But they didn’t manage to make use of a single one of the many opportunities. They replaced Yamsya, and once even the goal post played for the Finnish goalkeeper.

Nevertheless, by the middle of the period the Riga team had lost their drive. And their strength. As a result of a bungled attack and several saves by Mezhsargs the puck slide towards Suonpjaja. He didn’t bungle it. The Latvians really lost heart, and Nestor Noiva put the nail in the coffin. And very nicely too. Taking a pass at a meter out from the goal, he picked the puck up by a sharp corner and shot it right under the crossbeam!
