About

The Ukrainians jumped straight in despite being new to the Tournament with a series of attacks on the opposition goal, and the Atlant goalkeeper worked miracles to keep them out. The Moscow Region players finally got the puck back to the middle zone at the end of the first minute and in their first attack they forced a mistake by the opposition during a line change.

But the players in white coped well short-handed and didn’t let Atlant give their goalkeeper, Vasily Polgorodnik, much trouble. The puck returned to the middle zone and whenever it got as far as the goalkeeper a Donbass player was always there to pick it up.

The game levelled up in the middle of the period, with moments at each end. In the seventh minute the Atlant forward, Boris Khachaturov, made a very brisk counterattack but Vasily Polgorodnik was ready and hit the puck back with his knee pad. A minute later one of the hardest working Ukrainian forwards, Daniil Trakht missed a clear chance, failing to knock the puck into the near corner.

Trouble came to the Ukrainians unexpectedly. 5 minutes before the end of the period Donbass had a chance at a power play, but Vladimir Korobenko’s boys couldn’t press their attack home and the lads from Mytischi made a series of promising counterattacks. One of them ended in a goal: Vyacheslav Yarovoy was there to pick up a pass from behind the goal by Mikhail Korablev and the puck was in the net.

The two sides stayed evenly matched in the second period, but Atlant enjoyed a bit more of the play — enough for the team from the Moscow suburbs to get round the Donbass goalkeeper twice. First the forward Ivan Lykov used a power play to hit a pass straight into the empty corner.

Two minutes later another Atlant forward Andrey Tsvetkov came up the right flank and across the goal, slipping the puck through a gap in the near corner.

The Ukrainians failed to fight back in the third period as Atlant kept up the pressure, with a near-goal from the Mytischi forwards Yarovoy and Korablev who advanced on the Donbass net but couldn’t get past Vasily Polgorodnik. Pint-sized Andrey Tsvetkov kept going forward but couldn’t find a second score.

Donbass got a consolation goal when Daniil Trakht collided with Vladislav Lyubimov, who fell, leaving Trakht to knock the puck under the crossbar. But it was Yarovoy who closed the scoring in brilliant style, coming from behind the net and making the goal to give a 4:1 victory for Atlant.
