West Group finalists: Lokomotiv and CSKA to compete for the Super Final!

22 April 2016 | Report

The semi-finals of the 10th Gazprom Neft Cup in Sochi are over. The competition to reach the tournament finals was between Moscow’s Dynamo and Yaroslavl’s Lokomotiv and between Moscow’s CSKA and Severstal from Cherepovets.

The current tournament champions, Moscow’s Dynamo, and Yaroslavl’s Lokomotiv came out on to the ice at the Bolshoy Ice Dome to compete for reaching the Super Final. With support from an impressive contingent of fans, the white-and-blues dominated during the first period, but Loko managed to turn the game around and grab victory from the Dynamo players! Tears on one side and delight on the other proved how intense each game of the tournament had been. 3:1 — Yaroslavl is through to the West Group final.

In a parallel game at the Iceberg Skating Palace, the Cherepovets team Severstal battled it out with CSKA. After failing to score during the first period, the teams delighted the spectators in the second 15 minutes with a shower of goals, the army team coming out on top — 4:2 to the red-and-blues. In the final period, the teams again exchanged goals but the youngsters from Cherepovets couldn’t catch the favourites. A 5:3 victory for CSKA.

So the final West Group game on the Bolshoy’s ice, at 18:00 Moscow time, will be between the Yaroslavl Lokomotiv and CSKA. The winners will fly charter to Omsk on April 23, where, the next day, they will battle with the best East Group team for the tournament’s top trophy.
